What is Consultation Within a Worplace?
I was speaking with some friends the other night about a man who has a manufacturing business and is on ‘permanent holiday’ as his business grows and grows.
He says that one factor that contributes to the success of his organisation is the consulting he takes with all his employees.
He consults them about everything. He asks them which contracts he should accept and which ones to decline.
I then read an article in the Australian Institute of Training and Development (AITD) Journal which highlighted some simple steps of consultation in the workplace.
- Involve everyone in decisions which affect them.
- Offer opportunities for your people to express their thoughts and feelings.
- Encourage ideas for improvement.
- Share problem solving within a team.
- Treat all ideas seriously and with equal weighting rather than a token part of the exercise.
Of course workplaces are more complex than this but with a focus on these points with your people could see you making your professional life just that much more enjoyable, stress free and exciting.
Hey it could he an all year round holiday like our friend in manufacturing (maybe not, but it could be better).

Have You Met Kaylene?
If you have attended one of our public training programs then I know you have met Kaylene Grieve.
She is a training consultant with us here and has extensive experience in organisational strategy and operational training. Well, as our corporate training commitments are growing Kaylene will also manage additional corporate customer relationships.
It is not only a great feeling to have someone of Kaylene’s competence at Happening People but wonderful to have a person who can always find a solution.
Personally Speaking
Well May was one of my most busy months and I think that I was able to return all my calls. Phew!
If you called and did’t leave me a message, June will be easier to get me and if you want me specifically, mornings are the best before 10 am.
Kind regards,
Sam
